As Meaningful Use, PQRS, and CPCI have developed over the past few years, so have their reporting capabilities.  The race to achieve MU-required goals as well as a pattern of late-in-the-year Final Rule updates from Congress have required vendors to rapidly update reporting algorithms.  For Allscripts, what began as the Stimulus Reporting Portal with v11.2.3 migrated to the more robust Allscripts Analytics Portal (AAP) in v11.4.1. In keeping with the ever-changing landscape, AAP 15.2 was deployed to Production on June 9, 2015.  There are the usual logic changes, however at a higher number than seen in the past.  In fact, there were enough significant issues during UAT testing that this update was delayed for several few weeks.  This latest version brings numerous logic, value set, and even workflow changes – 21 pages of calculation changes to be exact!   Whenever there..

Allscripts offers several new enhancements for Allscripts TouchWorks EHR™ version 11.5, one of which is Electronic Prior Authorization (ePA) for medications.  When enabled, ePA serves two main functions: providers can send prior authorizations (PA) for medications to a patient’s pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), and can also receive requests for more information, approvals, and denials electronically from a patient’s PBM. Before looking at how ePA has been incorporated into Allscripts Touchworks EHR™, let’s take a look at some of the benefits of enabling ePA. Your organization won’t be constantly filling out paper forms for PAs Considering that 90% of PA requests require phone or fax[1], substantially less time will be spent waiting on faxes, sending faxes, and making phone calls It will increase physician satisfaction, as 91% of them say they are dissatisfied with PAs[2] It will provide significant cost reductions, as PAs..

You know that saying, “Timing is everything?” With the torrent of change that has hit healthcare, it seems as if the timing has not felt right for many organizations to attempt optimization. Why optimize if we cannot predict and factor in the next change? Optimization can come in 31 flavors!, our first blog in this series, introduced the methodology to manage the diversity of an optimization project by breaking it down into incremental, achievable goals. In this second article of the series, let’s discuss a real scenario. St. Charles Medical Group, located in the Pacific Northwest, collaborated with Galen Healthcare Solutions to define its optimization approach. This organization’s business strategy aligned with the current industry trend of acquiring smaller practices, which meant its long-term success depended upon a well-documented, metric-driven, and, more importantly, repeatable processes that met the needs of..

With the release of Allscripts TouchWorksTM EHR 15.1, there are quite a few enhancements geared toward improving the user experience in areas such as clinical documentation and administration.  One specific experience improvement can be found within vital signs entry. System administrators can now determine which vital signs are required fields. This change will highlight mandatory fields in yellow, and require all necessary information to be entered before users are able to commit and finalize the clinical documentation.  Benefits of this improvement will help ensure all necessary information is captured and in real time. This change can also be seen while in the Note Authoring workspace (NAW) when a vitals panel with required vital signs is included in that note.  As you can see from the image below, the table of contents will display Vitals in pale yellow.  Also notice that..

Have you seen the news about Allscripts TouchWorksTM 15.1?  Wow!  There are some great enhancements with V11 notes.  Included in this is the ability for providers to create personal text macros and insert those macros into V11 notes, as well as many other areas in TouchWorksTM. Another great new feature is the ability to run note output progress checks to determine if a minimum level of documentation has been recorded for specific note outputs. Additionally, one of our favorites is the required fields enhancement, which enables organizations to recommend orders or require providers or staff to complete specific items when documenting clinical services. These are great options when trying to educate providers and users on necessary ICD-10 documentation. As we continue to explore TouchWorksTM 15.1, we see that Allscripts has provided users with new options for the Immunization Series. One of these enhancements allows the total number of immunizations administered to display in parentheses (5) next to the immunization name. This feature enables the user to view the total number of immunizations administered for a patient in the Immunization Series grid at a glance without having to scroll through the list. Community data immunizations are included in the count before they are imported. This can be a quick reference for reviewing immunization schedules such as the Hepatitis B series, DTaP, HIB, IPV, etc. So many of these immunizations have a range of ages when they can be given. Take for example a child getting the first Hep A shot between ages 12 and 23 months; we know the second..

Patient privacy in an EHR is a subject at the front of everyone’s minds, patient and health care worker alike. The HIPAA Privacy Rule affords protection to all patients, and also special protection to patients with certain diagnoses or treatments for conditions, such as mental health, HIV/AIDS, or substance abuse. In an effort to provide more options for patient security around potentially sensitive health conditions, TouchWorksTM V15.1 has an added layer of security to flag patients who fit into those categories. In the Patient Profile Dialog Clinical Information, there is a new field for Potentially Sensitive Health that will flag patient charts that might contain potentially sensitive health conditions. If checked, the Available Communities in the Community Information section are all are automatically set to Not Shared. These can be manually changed to Shared if the patient provided appropriate written consent to..
